The Gender Prediction or "Ring" Test

So many of you may have heard of the gender prediction test done with a ring or needle tied to a string. As a refresher: the pregnant lady lies on her back and someone else holds a string with a ring or needle tied to the end over her belly. If the ring goes in circles it means a girl, if it swings back and forth it's a boy.

Ronnie and I decided to give it a try a couple of weeks ago. We first did it with me holding the string, and it whipped around in large circles…oops…I’m not supposed to hold the string…Ronnie held the string, but again we got circles. This confirms the Chinese Gender Prediction test that we are having a girl. Of course, my science minded husband said that I needed to try it on him, because if the string moved then the whole test was debunked. It just hung there straight, no movement at all. So while we didn’t decorate the nursery off of it, we thought we must be having a girl.

We had our next appointment with the OB on the 17th, and she had agreed a couple of days earlier that we could schedule our 20-week ultrasound a week early. I was so excited, and also thankful that we wouldn’t have to find time to schedule another appointment in between our normal ones. The ultrasound tech had a lot of measurements to take, and asked us to be patient while she did her job and then she would show us our baby. She checked, and then double-checked, whether we wanted to know the gender or not if she could tell anything from the ultrasound. We said, “Yes!” and she said, “Well, let me turn the screen towards you and show you he’s healthy”. HE?! We looked at each other and I busted up.

She asked if that was okay; and we both laughed and said yes, we just thought we were having a girl. She was actually surprised that the ring test didn’t work, because that one is the most accurate. And she told us as we looked at our son on the screen that he is 100% All American Male!

The ultrasound shot is one leg in the picture, one was stretched out of the screen, and there's his penis - right there for the world to see. I'm raising an exhibitionist already!

So now I am definitely out numbered in the house. Oh, and as for names…the nickname is no longer “SvenOlga” just Sven. We have ideas that we are bouncing around, but keeping those between us for now.

Here is another picture the tech took for us. He looks like an alien baby right now, but they all do at this point.

  1. Well Sven you are such a cute little boy, I think I will need to buy your Momma a cat (stuffed for sure) so that she will have someone to talk to when you grow up, just like Grandma :-) Let's sit and have a talk when your Grandmas come to visit in 2 weeks, maybe read a book or two, go for a walk.........and it begins.

  2. Very exciting! It's funny when you get it in your mind that you are having one or the other. I was convinced I was having a boy : )
